History

Malayala Manorama is a private LLC corporation company. It is owned by the Kandathil family and incorporated by Kandathil Varghese Mappillai at Kottayam on the date of 14 March 1888. This private company started with one hundred shares of ₹100 each. The investors paid in four equal amounts of installments.

Mr.Varghese Mappillai had worked as an editor of Kerala Mitram, which is a Malayalam language newspaper run by a  businessman Devji Bhimji in the Cochin. Then he took over the same position for the newspaper  Manorama. The Maharajah of Travancore Moolam Thirunal approved the logo of the Malayalam newspaper.

On 22 March 1890, the first edition of the paper was published from M.D Seminary, Kottayam, while the town was arranging a popular cattle fair. It was only a four-page newspaper which was published on Saturdays. This weekly newspaper became bi-weekly in the year of 1901, a tri-weekly on date of 2 July 1918, and at last a daily on 2 July 1928. In the year of 1938, Travancore state proscribed this Malayalam daily on charges of publishing news against the Diwan. Mammen Mappillai was then convicted and imprisoned. In the year of 1947, Malayala Manorama re-commenced regular publication after the Indian independence. In the year of 1954, after the death of Mammen Mappillai, his eldest son Mr. K. M. Cheriyan took over as the Editor-in-Chief.

Why people will choose the Malayala Manorama newspaper?

Malayala Manorama is an excellent newspaper in our country, its presentation is very attractive, also the news research is very extensive and explained in a simple manner. But we would say its better for local and regional news of the state of Kerala. Its national and international news is just also good though it has several tie-ups with international media houses they don’t serve the purpose. Consult some other daily newspaper for national news. If you want to choose this Malayalam then it’s up to you. Manorama’s readership growth is growing huge than all Malayalam publications combined. It has more new face readers than the next six Malayalam publications combined. The popular Malayalam daily has also increased its gap with the Malayalam daily in the second position forty-five-five lakh copies.
